The year is 872, and many of the separate kingdoms of what we now know as England have fallen to the invading Danes, leaving the great kingdom of Wessex standing alone and defiant under the command of King Alfred. Against this turbulent backdrop lives our hero, Uhtred. Born the son of a Saxon nobleman, he is captured by the Danes and raised as one of their own. Forced to choose between the country of his birth and the people of his upbringing, his loyalties are ever tested. What is he? Saxon or Dane? On a quest to reclaim his birthright, Uhtred must tread a dangerous path between both sides if he is to play his part in the birth of a new nation and, ultimately, recapture his ancestral lands.

The setting is a historical one of England roughly around 800-900 A.D. The conflict involves the vikings who are eager to take more ground and the native English peoples or more correctly the Saxons who desire to hold the ground they have and repel the Vikings from England. The main protagonist is a fictional character although his birth place and enemies who contest him; Ubba (Ubbe Lothbrok) and Guthrum are real figures.



IX secolo d.C., Regno di Northumbria. L’Inghilterra è quasi interamente soggiogata dalla supremazia vichinga e l’unico regno che cerca ancora di difendersi è quello di Wessex, guidato dal re Alfred the Great (David Dowson).


Il giovane Uhtred di Bebbanburg (Alexander Dreymon), rimasto orfano a causa delle razzie dei vichinghi, viene rapito dagli assassini del padre che vedono in lui le potenzialità di un vero guerriero danese e lo crescono come uno di loro.


Ormai adulto, Ulthred è schiavo delle sue doppie origini in un mondo in preda al caos e dove la guerra non è mai finita. Questo contrasto con il suo vecchio mondo sarà massimo proprio quando, per vari motivi, tornerà ad esso e cercherà di stabilire nuovi legami con la sua vecchia gente. Ad aiutarlo nella sua impresa sarà l’amica e amante Brida (Emily Cox).


Basata sulla serie best seller di romanzi “Le storie dei Re Sassoni” di Bernard Cornwell (pubblicati anche in Italia a partire dal 2006, con la casa editrice Longanesi), “The Last Kingdom” è una serie tv storica nata dalla coproduzione tra BBC America e BBC Two.

La serie è stata prodotta dalla stessa casa di produzione di “Downton Abbey”: la Carnival Films.

Questo historical drama combina personaggi realmente esistiti con eventi di pura finzione.


Nel cast internazionale ricordiamo: Tom Taylor nel ruolo del piccolo Uhtred, Matthew Macfadyen che interpreta Lord Uhtred, Ian Hart nei panni di Beocca e Peter Gantzler nel ruolo di Earl Ragnar.
