JAMES BALDWIN (1924-1987) was an American novelist, essayist, playwright, poet, and social critic.
Baldwin established himself as the indispensable voice of the Civil Rights era with such landmark novels as GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN (1953), GIOVANNI'S ROOM (1956), and the essay collections NOTES OF A NATIVE SON (1955) and NOBODY KNOWS MY NAME (1961). His fiction and essays explored palpable yet unspoken intricacies of racial, sexual, and class distinctions in Western society, and their inevitable if unnameable tensions. THE FIRE NEXT TIME (1963), perhaps the most influential of his writings, is a penetrating analysis of America's racial divide and an impassioned call to "end the racial nightmare . . . and change the history of the world." Baldwin's passionate and eloquent work continues to be relevant to this day, especially in his dramatizing of the unequal treatment of black men by the police and the justice system, his nuanced depictions of the black family, and his explorations of sexuality.
