Walt Longmire is the dedicated and unflappable sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyoming. Widowed only a year, he is a man in psychic repair but buries his pain behind his brave face, unassuming grin and dry wit.


La serie è ambientata nella piccola città di Absaroka County, nel Wyoming, ed è incentrata sulla vita dello sceriffo solitario Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor), uomo integerrimo che si trova a competere  il giovane agente Branch Connally (Bailey Chase) per la rielezione.

Walt deve inoltre convivere con un grande dolore: la moglie infatti è stata assassinata da una mano ignota un anno or sono

Insieme alla vicesceriffo, Victoria "Vic" Moretti (Katee Sackhoff), all’amico indiano Henry Standing Bear (Lou Diamond Phillips) e alla figlia Cady Longmire (Cassidy Freeman) , Walt dovrà far fronte alle proprie sfide senza farsi sopraffare.


Una delle novità della quinta stagione, toglierà subito il dubbio a tutti i fan: Walt è vivo. Il personaggio di Robert Taylor è infatti riuscito a sopravvivere all'attentato di un uomo armato che ha cercato di uccidere sia lui che Donna, ovvero l'attrice Ally Walker. Nella premiere ritroveremo Walt in ospedale, dove è stato ricoverato a lungo tempo.
