Il papero alieno Howard viene trasportato a Cleveland nel corso di un esperimento volto a studiare le specie aliene mediante l'impiego di un apparecchio noto come spettroscopio laser. Nel girovagare disorientato per le strade della città, Howard incontra Beverly Switzler, una giovane e deliziosa cantante rock che, infastidita da ragazzi invadenti, viene salvata dal papero.
