Johnny Clay, ex carcerato, progetta un grosso colpo: impadronirsi dell'ingente somma, custodita negli uffici di un ippodromo in un'importante giornata di corse. Il piano viene studiato in tutti i suoi particolari, e a ciascuno dei complici è affidato un compito. Gli esecutori principali sono quattro, Kennan, un poliziotto assillato dalla necessità di pagare dei debiti di gioco; O'Reilly, un barista che ha la moglie ammalata e bisognosa di cure, Unger, vecchio allibratore alcoolizzato; Peatty, un modesto cassiere dell'ippodromo, vittima dell'amore non corrisposto per la moglie, Sherry, donna ambiziosa ed avida. Ci sono inoltre due collaboratori che non conoscono il piano di Johnny. Gli ingranaggi predisposti funzionano perfettamente e Johnny riesce a mettere le mani su un due paio di milioni di dollari. Nel luogo stabilito i complici stanno aspettando Johnny per la spartizione del bottino. Invece del capo, si presenta un giovanotto armato: è l'amante di Sherry, la moglie del cassiere, che, venuto a conoscenza dell'impresa, vuole impadronirsi dell'ingente somma. Ha luogo una sparatoria, nella quale tutti restano uccisi, meno Peatty, che trova la forza di correre a casa per uccidere la moglie. Johnny, accortosi della strage, tenta di fuggire in aeroplano col bottino, insieme alla fidanzata, ma la vecchia valigia, in cui ha chiuso le banconote rubate, cade a terra, s'apre e i biglietti si disperdono, spinti in ogni direzione dal soffio potente dei motori di un aereo. Il colpo inaspettato toglie a Johnny ogni possibilità di reazione ed egli si lascia arrestare senza opporre resistenza.





Johnny Clay, a former prisoner, plans a big blow: take on the huge sum, kept in the offices of a racecourse on an important day of racing. The plan is studied in all its details, and each of the accomplices is entrusted with a task. The main executives are four, Kennan, a policeman who is suffering from the need to pay gambling debts; O'Reilly, a bartender who has a sick wife and needs care, Unger, an old alcoholic libelist; Peatty, a modest basketball cashier, victim of unpaid love for his wife, Sherry, an ambitious and avid woman. There are also two collaborators who do not know Johnny's plan. Preloaded gears work perfectly and Johnny manages to get a couple of million dollars. At the venue the accomplices are waiting for Johnny to share the booty. Instead of the boss, there is an armed young man: he is the lover of Sherry, the cashier's wife, who, when acquainted with the company, wants to take on the huge sum. There is a shootout in which everyone is killed, less Peatty, who finds the strength to run home to kill his wife. Johnny, accustomed to the massacre, tries to flee the plane with the booty, along with the girlfriend, but the old suitcase, where he closed the stolen banknotes, falls to the ground, opens up and the tickets disperse, pushed in every direction by the powerful puff Of an airplane's engines. The unexpected shot takes Johnny away from any chance of reaction and he lets himself stop without resisting.
