Nella Francia del 1891, il giovane Armand Roulin riceve dal padre postino l'incarico di recapitare una lettera a Theo van Gogh, fratello del pittore olandese che da poco si è tolto la vita. Armand si reca a Parigi, dove però non riesce a rintracciare Theo; intraprende dunque una ricerca che lo porta ad incontrare persone e luoghi fondamentali nella vita di Vincent van Gogh, scoprendone poco a poco la vita tormentata e la straordinaria opera che ha saputo produrre.
