The crew of a Royal Naval expedition searching for the Arctic's treacherous Northwest Passage discovers instead a monstrous predator.
Siamo nel 1845 e due navi della Royal Navy britannica, la Erebus e la Terror, stanno tentando un'impresa ambiziosa quanto pericolosa: affrontare territori ostili ed inesplorati dell'artico per trovare una rotta per attraversare il passaggio a nord-ovest. Con ben 129 uomini a bordo delle due imbarcazioni, sotto il comando di un veterano delle spedizioni artiche alla sua quarta ed ultima impresa, Sir John Franklin, la Erebus e la Terror restano intrappolate tra i ghiacci e non saranno più ritrovate fino al 2014, quando il rottame della prima è stato rinvenuto al largo dell'isola di King William, seguita due anni dopo dalla seconda nave. Cosa sia accaduto realmente alla spedizione è stato a lungo indagato e discusso, quel che è certo è che i marinai dell'equipaggio hanno dovuto affrontare una disperata lotta per la sopravvivenza in uno dei luoghi più difficili ed inospitali del pianeta.
