夏蒂终于在酒吧门口遇见了自己中意的父亲人选，那是一个英俊潇洒、成熟而有品位的男人。这天楚蒂把男人邀请回了家，并且为他和母亲精心准备了一顿烛光晚餐。但她并不知道，男人是个有妇之夫，也是母亲多年来的情人，几天前，因为不想给女儿带来不好的影响，母亲刚刚和他分了手。夏蒂的计划显然落空了。夏蒂去参加朋友的生日聚会，回家的路上被一群小流氓骚扰，幸亏一个中年男人出手帮助了夏蒂，让夏蒂意外的是，男人竟然就是自己从未谋面的父亲，不久前他搬回了小镇。为了给姐姐买一份像样的礼物，夏蒂登门找父亲借钱。父亲已经再婚，但因为生活得也很艰辛，始终没有来找她们母女，出于对夏蒂的愧疚，为了凑足她需要的20美元，他甚至和妻子大吵了一架。
