The story follows Jack, a highly intelligent serial killer, over the course of twelve years, and depicts the murders that really develop his inner madman.

Stati Uniti, 1970. Jack è un ingegnere psicopatico con tendenze ossessivo-compulsive. Dopo aver ammazzato una donna che gli aveva chiesto soccorso in seguito ad un incidente, si convince di dover continuare ad uccidere. Ogni suo omicidio deve essere un'opera d'arte: sempre più complessa e ingegnosa. Inizia così una partita a scacchi contro la polizia, lunga dodici anni, condotta dal più astuto e spietato omicida seriale....
