Two hundred years in the future, in a fully colonized solar system, police detective Josephus Miller (Thomas Jane), who was born in the asteroid belt, is given the assignment to find a missing young woman; Julie Mao (Florence Faivre). Meanwhile, James Holden (Steven Strait), the first officer of an ice freighter, is witness to an unprovoked attack upon the ship, by craft believed to be from Mars (MCRN Federation). As news of the attack spreads throughout the system, the incident's flow-on threatens to destabilize already tenuous relations between Earth, Mars and The Belt. Far away from the struggles in deep space, on Earth, Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo), a powerful United Nations executive and diplomat, works to prevent war between Earth and Mars by any means. Soon, the 3 find out the missing woman and the ice freighter's fate are part of a vast covert conspiracy which threatens all humanity.

Trama:
La stagione 5 di The Expanse continua a narrare la storia degli umani che in massa abbandonano il sistema solare in cerca di una nuova casa e di un nuovo inizio in mondi simili alla Terra. Le conseguenze dello sfruttamento secolare della Cintura sono ormai reali e la resa dei conti è inevitabile.
Per la crew della Rocinante e per i leader dei Pianeti Interni e della Cintura il passato e il presente collidono, e il futuro riserva sfide che avranno conseguenze su tutto il sistema solare.
Amos (Wes Chatham) torna sulla Terra per confrontarsi con il suo passato e con le conseguenze di una vita che tanto ha combattuto per lasciarsi alle spalle.
Naomi (Dominique Tipper) riesce a raggiungere suo figlio in un tentativo disperato di salvarlo dalla dannosa influenza del padre.
Bobbie (Frankie Adams) e Alex (Cas Anvar) cercano di affrontare il collasso di Marte seguendo i movimenti di un’ambigua congrega avente legami con criminali e terroristi.
Holden (Steven Strait) lotta con le conseguenze dei suoi trascorsi con la Protomolecola, con gli alieni che l’hanno costruita e con il mistero di cosa li abbia annientati.
Drummer (Cara Gee), in compagnia di una nuova squadra, combatte per fuggire da chi e cosa è stata in precedenza e Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo), rifiutandosi di essere relegata ai margini, farà di tutto per prevenire un attacco terroristico di proporzioni storiche.
