Collateral Beauty, il film diretto da David Frankel, vede protagonista Howard Inlet (Will Smith), direttore di un azienda pubblicitaria, profondamente depresso a causa della perdita prematura di sua figlia.

Whit (Edward Norton), Claire (Kate Winslet) e Simon (Michael Peña), suoi amici e collaboratori capiscono che il suo stato d'animo sta diventando un problema per l'azienda: dopo aver perso sua figlia, a Howard non importa perdere tutto il resto. Gli amici per questo, assumono un'investigatrice privata per capire cosa l'amico stia passando e cercare di aiutarlo.

Quest'ultima, Sally scopre che l'uomo invia strane lettere indirizzate ad "Amore", "Tempo” e "Morte". Superato lo sconcerto, decidono di assumere attori che incarnino questi stati d'animo per organizzare incontri con Howard e rispondere agli interrogativi presenti nelle sue lettere. Intanto Howard decide di frequentare un gruppo di sostegno e conosce Madeleine (Naomie Harris) che ha perso anche lei la figlia. Si susseguono gli incontri organizzati dai suoi colleghi, fin quando "Amore" riesce a far capire ad Howard che deve permettere all'amore di essere ancora presente nella sua esistenza, in quanto elemento fondamentale per continuare a vivere.
