Un ragazzo di nome Gunner intraprende una missione improbabile per salvare la madre malata, andando alla ricerca di una figura mitica che si dice abbia poteri magici di guarigione.



Il giovane Gunner ha delle vocazioni artistiche che sua madre sostiene apertamente, a differenza del padre Amos. Ma, considerato che quest’ultimo è spesso in viaggio per lavoro, non ha la possibilità di opporsi eccessivamente ai desideri del figlio, con il quale le divergenze sono però evidenti.



Entrambi cercano comunque di appianare le incomprensioni per quieto vivere, e anche per non provocare ulteriori dispiaceri alla madre di Gunner, gravemente ammalata. Quando le condizioni della donna proseguiranno a peggiorare, Gunner tenterà di informarsi su quali rivoluzionarie e recenti cure siano state perfezionate per risolvere casi di questo genere. Ciò che troverà ancor prima, però, appare come un rimedio più immediato: i poteri curativi di un tale Uomo dell’Acqua, di cui si dicono miracoli.



Così, insieme all’amica ribelle Jo, Gunner si inoltra nella foresta alla ricerca di quell’individuo. Ma, con il passare del tempo, dei ragazzi non si avranno più notizie. Così, ad Amos non rimarrà altra scelta che immergersi, come mai fatto, nel mondo del figlio, per riuscire finalmente a ritrovarlo…
