Da una bozza della sceneggiatura fu tratto il romanzo omonimo Fase IV di Barry N. Malzberg (pubblicato nel 1973, 10 mesi prima dell'uscita del film). Fu l'unico lungometraggio diretto dal designer pubblicitario statunitense Bass, noto per le sequenze iniziali di molti film.
