The Mauritanian, il film diretto da Kevin Macdonald, racconta la vera storia di Mohamedou Ould Slahi (Tahar Rahim), un uomo musulmano proveniente dalla Mauritania, che contro la sua volontà viene catturato dal governo Americano insieme a molti altri stranieri, quando dopo gli attacchi dell'11 settembre del 2001, gli Stati Uniti fecero partire una serie di operazioni militari con lo scopo d'individuare tutti coloro che fossero coinvolti con il terrorismo anti-americano. Mohamedou fu trattenuto nella prigione di Guantanamo per quattordici lunghi anni, sebbene non fosse mai stata presentata alcuna accusa contro di lui.

A difendere legalmente l'uomo è Nancy Hollander (Jodie Foster) che insieme alla sua associata Teri Duncan (Shailene Woodley), per garantire la libertà di Mohamedou, dovrà far fronte in mezzo a mille ostacoli, anche allo scetticismo federale. Il procuratore militare tenente colonnello Stuart Couch (Benedict Cumberbatch), che spera di vendicare la morte dei suoi colleghi militari uccisi negli attacchi terroristici dell'11 settembre, alla fine si troverà a collaborare con Hollander e porterà alla luce sorprendenti e scioccanti scoperte.
