Fuga per la vittoria è un film del 1981 diretto da John Huston, liberamente ispirato a fatti realmente accaduti. La vicenda è ambienta nel 1942, nel pieno della Seconda guerra mondiale, che ha costretto John Colby (Michael Caine) a lasciare la sua carriera da calciatore nel West Ham per unirsi alle truppe inglesi. Un giorno, Colby viene notato dal maggiore nazista Von Steiner (Max von Sydow), in visita presso un campo di concentramento per prigionieri Alleati nel quale è l'ex calciatore è recluso. Commosso dalla sorte del talentuoso sportivo ed essendo stato anche lui calciatore nella Nazionale tedesca, Von Steiner propone a Colby di formare una squadra e partecipare ad una partita. Sebbene le intenzioni del nazista siano buone, il regime approfitta dell’idea per la propria campagna propagandista. La partita dovrà necessariamente essere vinta dalla Nazionale tedesca presso lo stadio di Colombes a Parigi, così da dimostrare a tutto il mondo la superiorità dei nazisti sugli Alleati.

Nonostante le iniziali incertezze, Colby riesce a radunare alcuni validi calciatori tra cui l’inglese Brady, lo scozzese Hayes e il calcatore di colore Luis Fernandez (Pelé). Venuto a conoscenza della possibilità di lasciare il campo di concentramento, il canadese Robert Hatch (Sylvester Stallone) convince Colby a coinvolgerlo nel progetto. Hatch, in realtà, medita di fuggire dallo stadio con i suoi compagni, grazie alla complicità dei partigiani francesi che li preleveranno nello spogliatoio, approfittando dell’intervallo del primo tempo. Ben presto giunge il giorno del match. Lo stadio è stracolmo di civili francesi che manifestano il loro entusiasmo per la squadra degli alleati. La partita inizia ma l’arbitraggio è assolutamente scorretto e a favore dei nazisti. Giunti al 4-1 per i tedeschi dopo una serie di decisioni discutibili da parte dell’arbitro, viene annunciato il primo break ovvero il momento in cui segretamente la squadra si sarebbe data alla fuga. Ma alzando gli occhi verso gli spalti, da dove il pubblico li acclama per ricevere un segno di speranza contro l’oppressione, la squadra inizia a nutrire dubbi sul piano…
