Note : Dario Argento was well-established as a screenwriter by the time he made his directing debut with this film in 1970, and giallo was already a defined genre, favored by masters like Mario Bava, but this launched both Argento and giallo to new heights of attention, being well-received both in Italy and abroad. It doesn't hurt that it's shot by Uber-DP and later three-time Academy Award winner Vittorio Storaro, contrasting starkly monochromatic modernist offices and galleries with the lush, saturated but run-down and dirty streets and apartment buildings of Rome.

As a story, it's simple but made complicated, as gialli often do, and the motivations of the killer are a bit lost in psychobabble, but the story and its resolution is not really the reason to watch this. It's stylish, atmospheric, and very pretty to look at, the leads are charismatic, there are some compelling secondary characters, and even some genuinely funny comic relief.

The Arrow 4k remaster is generally very good, although I wouldn't have minded a bit less grain and maybe some management of oversaturated colors. Still, not much to complain about, and Troy Howarth, who you're probably familiar with by now, draws from his deep expertise on the commentary track as usual.
