I segni del cuore, il film diretto da Sian Heder, racconta la storia di Ruby (Emilia Jones), una ragazza di diciassette anni che durante le prime ore del mattino, prima di entrare a scuola, lavora sulla barca di famiglia per aiutare i suoi genitori (Marlee Matlin e Troy Kotsur) e suo fratello (Daniel Durant), per portare avanti la loro attività di pesca sulla costa del Massachusetts. Ruby è l'unica persona udente della sua famiglia.

Da quando la giovane ragazza è entrata a far parte del coro della scuola, scopre di avere una forte attrazione per il canto. Il suo maestro Bernardo (Eugenio Derbez), crede ci sia qualcosa di speciale nella giovane adolescente e la spinge a considerare una prestigiosa scuola di musica per il suo futuro.

Ruby si troverà così davanti a un bivio: abbandonare i suoi adorati genitori per seguire il suo più grande sogno o continuare ad aiutare la sua famiglia.
