Il Principe cerca Figlio è il sequel del cult-movie di John Landis, Il principe cerca moglie, uscito nel 1988.
Nel film Eddie Murphy riprende il ruolo di Akeem, appena eletto Re del lussureggiante regno di Zamunda. Dopo che suo figlio è fuggito a New York, Akeem è costretto a partire dal continente africano e fare ritorno nel Queens, il quartiere della Grande Mela dove tutto ebbe inizio, per rintracciare e riportare a casa il giovane principe ereditario.
In questa nuova avventura Akeem sarà ancora una volta affiancato dal suo fidato consigliere Semmi.
