Platoon, è un film del 1986 diretto da Oliver Stone ed è ispirato alle reali esperienze vissute dal regista nel 1967-1968.

Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) è un giovane americano che abbandona la sua comoda vita, rinuncia al college e si offre volontario come soldato operativo. È il suo idealismo che lo spinge a questa estrema scelta: non può sopportare che siano solo i poveri o gli uomini di colore a partire per il Vietnam. Quindi parte: è il settembre del 1967 e al suo arrivo a Da Nang troverà, come primo impatto, soldati americani morti e allineati in sacchi per cadaveri.

Chris è assegnato alla Bravo Company, 25a divisione di fanteria, che opera al confine con la Cambogia. Il suo plotone pattuglia la giungla, una giungla inospitale, intrisa di fango, a tratti inaccessibile per i folti cespugli, serpenti e insetti: ma la difficoltà maggiore la troverà nel constatare che la sporca guerra lo sta trasformando in una macchina da distruzione.

Il plotone è spaccato dalla contrapposizione dei due sergenti sempre in disaccordo: Bob Barnes (Tom Berenger) freddo e spietato, e Elias Grodin (Willem Dafoe) umano e comprensivo, che in seguito diventerà grande amico di Chris. La giovane recluta ormai é un soldato che sostiene marce estenuanti, scava trincee, passa notti di veglia, assalta i vietcong e per sostenere le atrocità e gli orrori a cui assiste, usa droghe. Il suo idealismo cede davanti a questo crescendo di concrete esasperazioni.

Chris combatte ostinatamente per far prevalere la sua umanità in quell'inferno dove il vero nemico è quello che si annida nel più profondo della coscienza.
