Mulholland Drive è una lunga e vecchia strada di Los Angeles: nasce nel deserto, attraversa i quartieri ricchi e finisce a strapiombo sulla costa di Malibù. Bisognerebbe ricordarsi di questa simbologia per cercare di dare un senso all' onirico ed enigmatico film di David Lynch. Quella che il regista stesso ha definito come "una semplice storia d'amore nella città dei sogni" è in realtà un intricato enigma sospeso tra allucinazione e realtà, con un tocco di nostalgia per il noir degli anni '40 ed una aperta ostilità verso l'attuale star system. Rita è un'avvenente bruna sopravvissuta ad un incidente d'auto in seguito al quale ha però perso la memoria, Betty un'aspirante attrice di belle speranze che la ospita nel proprio appartamento e se ne innamora. Le due protagoniste cercano di far luce sull'amnesia di Rita, per scoprire che in realtà niente è come sembra....
