Note : Clive Barker is obviously a towering name in horror, and this film was supposed to be his crowning achievement, a "Star Wars" of horror films, with noted David Boreanaz lookalike Craig Sheffer in the lead, David Cronenberg as the main antagonist, scored by Danny Elfman, and even some designs and matte paintings by Ralph McQuarrie. It didn't work out that way, studio interference in the cut and bad marketing made it a flop, and it was only in 2014 that Barker got his hands on the original material and could create and release this director's cut. It's still uneven and flawed, but never uninteresting, with original creatures, cool practical effects, good performances, perhaps the creepiest slasher mask ever seen on film, and a LOT of gay subtext. Hugh Quarshie and old Pinhead himself, Doug Bradley, also show up.

Blue-collar misfit Aaron Boone has been in and out of therapy for a while, but now his psychiatrist informs him that he thinks Boone's responsible for a series of murders. Boone has been obsessed with a place called Midian, where monsters can live in peace and be accepted, but his search for it changes his life and also has consequences for the community of weird beings in Midian, when the psychiatrist allies himself with a local militia to root them out.

This Shout Factory remaster is quite good looking, perhaps slightly grainier than necessary, but good color and contrast. The 5.1 remaster also sounds good, and the commentary track featuring Clive Barker himself is well worth listening to. Note that the director's cut is similar to, but not the same as, the Cabal Cut that was floating around for a while, and definitely not the same as the "Ultimate Cabal Cut", which is much longer and includes material of very low quality.
