Serenity - L'Isola Dell'Inganno, il film scritto e diretto dal candidato all'Oscar Steven Knight, segue le vicende di Baker Dill (Matthew McConaughey), il capitano di una barca da pesca ritiratosi su una piccola isola al largo della Florida per sfuggire al suo passato. Solitario e facilmente irritabile, Baker trascorre le sue giornate alle prese con i turisti e con Constance (Diane Lane), una donna più grande di lui con cui si frequenta. Ma la sua pacifica esistenza, è destinata a volgere al termine quando la sua sensuale ex moglie, Karen (Anne Hathaway), si presenta da lui con un'agghiacciante richiesta d'aiuto: uccidere il suo nuovo e violento marito (Jason Clarke) prima che possa fare del male a lei e al figlio. In cambio di 10 milioni di dollari, Karen propone a Baker di portare l'uomo sulla sua barca e gettarlo in pasto agli squali una volta per tutte.
