A metropolis in turmoil. From economy to culture, politics to the underworld - everything is in the grip of radical change. Speculation and inflation are already tearing away at the foundations of the still young Weimar Republic. Growing poverty and unemployment stand in stark contrast to the excesses and indulgence of the city's night life and its overflowing creative energy. Gereon Rath, a young police inspector from Cologne, is transferred to Berlin in order to solve a criminal case - a porno ring run by the Berlin Mafia. What at first glance appears to be simply a matter of extortion soon reveals itself to be a scandal that will forever change the lives of both Gereon and his closest associates. Together with stenotypist Charlotte Ritter and his partner Bruno Wolter, Rath is confronted with a tangled web of corruption, drug dealing, and weapons trafficking, forcing him into an existential conflict as he is torn between loyalty and uncovering the truth. And we are left wondering: in this story, who is friend and who is foe? With the political unrest spurred by May Day demonstrations and rising National Socialism, even an institution like the "Rote Burg," Berlin's police headquarters and the center of democracy and the constitutional state, is increasingly becoming the melting pot of a democracy whose days are numbered.

This is apparently the most expensive non-english language series ever made for TV (40 million euros production) This series is a Netflix Production by the way
This is a very well made and interesting look at societal culture in Germany circa the roaring 20s
The interactions between men and women, and in general is an interesting look at the culture
the mores as well as the understanding of the human spirit and the mind of these Europeans
who give good strength at times seeming to what are values to be preserved - such as in what
are traditional ideas of support of family concepts along the way.
There's a crime story angle to this with a focus on a senior Policeman's career and even
involving potential crimes against the state and the ideas surrounding those who oppose
"aberrant democracy" notions that are affecting the sensibilities of some the wrong way,
while a most prophetic moment seeming for the times which are now contemporary
as we look around us across the globe when the statement is made that "Broken
automatons belong in a huge landfill" rather than to persist with any longer that is

English subtitles template included for all episodes - we do see there's subs for
S1 in Russian on the net, and perhaps complete subs for Arabic and Farsi too
Italian subs weren't found this time around, there's apparently a dub version out
there if folks interested, although a comment on IMDB says the dub version is awful
by comparison, I believe they were in fact no doubt referring to an aired english dub
version instead. We bring you the original German audio for authenticity and
edification in what we try to glean of the nuances which cannot be captured in
any attempt of a dub generally speaking in place of using subtitles instead which
has always been the preference we have suggested folks go along with instead
along the way, to capture the movie as intended to best impart the characters
as portrayed in all the authentic fullness as it were.
