Nel 1917 in Portogallo la pastorella Lucia, una bambina di dieci anni, e i suoi due cugini riferiscono di aver visto la Vergine Maria. Le loro parole diventano d'ispirazione per i credenti ma accendono la rabbia dei funzionari della Chiesa e delle autorità secolari, che cercano in tutti i modi di far loro ritrattare i racconti.
