American Horror Story è una serie antologica. Ogni stagione racconta una storia autoconclusiva legata al genere horror, esplorando argomenti e sottogeneri come lo slasher, la casa infestata dagli spettri, la stregoneria, il satanismo, il manicomio e persino l’elezione presidenziale del 2016. Il cast rimane parzialmente invariato ogni anno, dando agli attori la possibilità di interpretare più ruoli. Anche se ogni ciclo di episodi è tecnicamente a sé stante, personaggi di una stagione specifica possono apparire in un’altra, dato che tutte le storie si svolgono nel medesimo universo. In particolare, l’ottava stagione è un vero e proprio crossover tra la prima e la terza.
