Whiskey Tango Foxtrot è un film del 2016 diretto da Glenn Ficarra e John Requa, vede protagonista la reporter Kim Barker (Tina Fey), che nel 2002 è stata mandata come inviata di guerra a Kabul. È la donna in realtà che ha richiesto il trasferimento, per uscire da una routine che l'aveva stancata e una relazione che ormai non funzionava più. Quando arriva all'alloggio fa la conoscenza di Tanya Vanderpoel (Margot Robbie), una collega veterana dell'Afghanistan, che le mostra la vita a Kabul, spiegandole che è più sicura di come si pensi e che nello stabile vengono spesso organizzati party, dove ci si diverte senza troppi freni. Così decidono di partecipare a una festa dove incontrano Iain MacKelpie (Martin Freeman) e Shakira El-Khoury (Sheila Vand), con i quali trascorreranno diverse serate piacevoli.

Passa qualche giorno e a Kim viene assegnato di seguire un convoglio di truppe americane che stanno riparando un pozzo. Qui intervista diversi soldati, tutti convinti che le persone abbiano dimenticato la guerra in Afghanistan, perché troppo presi da quella in Iraq. Mentre stanno facendo ritorno alla base, la loro auto viene attaccata da due talebani: Fahim (Christopher Abbott), la guida locale, dice a Kim di rimanere in macchina, ma lei non obbedisce e riprende tutta la scena. Si salva, ma questo non sarà l'ultimo attacco che subirà nella sua nuova vita da giornalista di guerra…
