Argo è un film del 2012 diretto e interpretato da Ben Affleck.

La vicenda è basata su fatti realmente accaduti durante la rivoluzione islamica in Iran.

Il 4 novembre 1979 gli islamisti iraniani assaltano l'ambasciata americana a Teheran come rappresaglia contro il presidente Jimmy Carter, che ha dato asilo allo scià Reza Pahlavi negli Stati Uniti. I militanti esigono che lo scià venga estradato e ricondotto in Iran per essere processato, secondo il volere dell'Ayatollah Khomeyni.

Una volta violati i cancelli, i militanti assaltano l'ambasciata e prendono in ostaggio 52 diplomatici. Sei funzionari, trovandosi nell’unico edificio del complesso con uscita sulla strada, riescono a scappare.

Dopo essere stati rifiutati dall’ambasciata inglese, i sei vengono accolti in casa dall'ambasciatore canadese Ken Taylor (Victor Garber). A sessantanove giorni dall'inizio della crisi, i canadesi sono sempre più a disagio nel tenere i sei americani nella loro ambasciata. Sapendo che è solo questione di tempo prima che i sei vengano scoperti e probabilmente uccisi, il Dipartimento di Stato degli Stati Uniti consulta Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck), un agente della CIA specialista in operazioni di esfiltrazione.

Mendez critica le proposte presentate fino a quel momento, ma non ha un’alternativa valida da offrire. Un giorno, mentre è a casa a guardare il film "Battle for the Planet of the Apes" con suo figlio, ha la giusta ispirazione: i sei fuggiaschi fingeranno di essere cineasti canadesi alla ricerca delle location per un nuovo film di fantascienza intitolato “Argo”.

E’ “la migliore cattiva idea” che si potesse trovare, ma viene subito accettata dalle autorità governative americane e canadesi. Mendez e il suo supervisore Jack O'Donnell (Bryan Cranston) contattano John Chambers (John Goodman), un truccatore di Hollywood che ha già creato travestimenti per la CIA.

Rendendosi conto che la copertura dell’operazione dovrà essere estremamente credibile, Chambers contatta il produttore cinematografico Lester Siegel (Alan Arkin). Inizialmente scettico, Siegel alla fine accetta di aiutare Mendez. Mettendo in atto le strategie dello show business, Mendez e Siegel fondano una società di produzione chiamata “Studio Six Productions", acquistano una sceneggiatura, ed emettono comunicati stampa in cui annunciano che stanno per girare “Argo”, un film di fantascienza basato sul romanzo “Lord of Lights” di Roger Zelazny.

Fingendosi il produttore del film “Argo”, Mendez riesce ad atterrare a Teheran e a raggiungere i diplomatici, cui fornisce falsi documenti d'identità canadesi per superare il controllo in aeroporto. L’operazione “Canadian Caper” ha così inizio.
