Note : This finally got a BluRay release after being on various streaming services, and it's kind of a hidden gem, a story of Holmes and Watson in their teenage years that's fit very snugly into the formula of those Spielberg-related 80s adventure movies, but it also has elements of horror and the supernatural. It's written by Chris Columbus, and you can certainly see a lot of elements of what became the early Harry Potter movies here, with the gothic architecture boarding school, arrogant upper-class antagonist student, and hated chemistry class, although it suffers a bit from tonal whiplash and a need to stuff in as many references to future Holmes staples as possible. Worth seeing (again), especially if you have any kind of fond memory of it, or you just like Victorian weird tales or Egyptian death cults. Also notable for having the world's first fully CGI character, the "stained glass knight", which still holds up.

Young Watson transfers to a new school where he makes friends with young Holmes, and they get embroiled in a sinister plot involving mysterious deaths at the hands of invisible monsters, an Egyptian cult hidden in the middle of London, and a rather indefensible apologia for British colonialism and plunder. Stiff upper lip saves the day, of course.

I'm almost 100% sure this Paramount BluRay is based on the same master as the streaming versions that have been floating around, and it's not great, 16:9 full frame, and seemingly telecined with a light sharpening applied, but it does the job. 5.1 track sounds good, no extras or anything.
