Nel 1928 viene rinvenuto in Egitto un grande anello di metallo sconosciuto con incisi dei geroglifici. Anni dopo, grazie ad un giovane egittologo, Daniel Jackson, l'anello si rivela essere una porta interplanetaria, attraverso la quale un gruppo di soldati americani, guidati dal colonnello Jonathan O'Neil, approda insieme a Jackson in un pianeta simile all'antico Egitto, dove lavora una comunità di schiavi. Decifrando anche delle iscrizioni, mostrategli da Skaara, figlio del capo popolo e da Shàuri, una ragazza del luogo, Daniel scopre che Ra, un extraterrestre, per non estinguersi, si è impossessato dei corpi di giovani ragazzi, ed ha realizzato lo stargate per fornirsi di schiavi fatti venire dalla Terra, da impiegare nelle miniere che servono alla sua tecnologia superiore.
