Tre donne di generazioni diverse _ nonna, madre, figlia _ eliminano per insofferenza o per noia i propri mariti. Tutti annegati, sebbene con modalità diverse. Con la complicità di un medico legale, loro amico e corteggiatore, fanno passare quelle morti per accidentali...
Nel raccontare moralmente questa storia amorale il regista più dandy e perverso del cinema britannico ha fatto una commedia nera che si trasforma in dolente tragicommedia, impregnata di umorismo, ironia ed efferata dolcezza, giocando con i numeri, gli insetti, il sesso, i cadaveri, la solidarietà femminile. Capolavoro grottesco di Greenaway. Nella colonna sonora un Mozart sublime. .
