Dramatisation of Primo Levi's inspiring novel broadcast

to mark the sixtieth anniversary of VE day.



Based on a true story told to Levi. It follows Mendel,

a Red Army artilleryman, separated from his unit at the

Battle of Kursk, who links up with a group of Jewish

partisans who fight their way west across Ukraine, Poland

and Germany hoping to reach Palestine via Italy.



A sensitive production of an extraordinary tale.
