The Ruts were a British rock band formed in 1978 in London, England, who performed (according to Allmusic) "a unique blend of punk rock with reggae and dub" and were "one of the most exciting bands of the British rock scene of the late 70s " The band became famous for the singles “In a Rut” (which was noticed and promoted by John Peel) and the hit “Babylon’s Burning” (#7, 1979), as well as political activity, in particular within the framework of the Rock Against Racism movement, which they supported with the first days of its creation.
The Ruts' career was cut short after the death of lead singer Malcolm Owen in 1980 (from an overdose), but before that the group managed to release six singles and an album considered one of the most important of its time. A month after Owen's death, the single "West One" entered the British charts. A posthumous collection of previously unreleased material, The Grin and Bear It, released by Virgin Records the same year, was also a success.
The remaining members continued to perform for some time under the name Ruts DC, but performed music of a completely different style.
