Coco

Little Mexican Miguel loves to play the guitar, but he won't admit it to anyone. In his family, any music has been banned since Miguel's great-great-grandfather abandoned his wife and daughter for a pop career. Finally, the boy decides to open up to his family and take part in a music competition in honor of the Day of the Dead, an annual Mexican holiday during which people come to cemeteries to honor their deceased relatives. But when the domineering grandmother finds out that Miguel has a guitar, she breaks the instrument. Meanwhile, the boy determines from a fragment of a family photo that his great–great-grandfather became the famous musician and actor Ernesto de la Cruz - Miguel's idol who died in the prime of life. The kid decides that he has the right to borrow Ernesto's guitar for the competition, which is stored in his crypt. But when Miguel steals the instrument, he incurs a curse and is transported to the world of the dead. To return back, the boy must find his great-great-grandfather and receive his blessing.

Pixar animation superstudio has long been reproached for the fact that, unlike its "older sister" Walt Disney Animation, it draws cartoons almost exclusively about white–skinned characters - of course, when it does not create tapes about robots, fish or toys. Tired of politically correct criticism, Pixar decided to release the most Mexican cartoon that could be created.

"Coco's Secret" was drawn with the active participation of American-Mexican screenwriter, artist and director Adrian Molina, it is originally voiced almost exclusively by Mexican and American-Mexican actors, and it plays out in the plot almost everything that Mexico is known for. It is easier to list what the "Mystery" does not affect – tacos (tortillas with stuffing) and drug cartels. Day of the Dead, Frida Kahlo, masked wrestling, tequila, folk and author's music, colorful flying jaguars, huge gullies in the ground, immigration control, grotesque humor, authoritarian grandmothers, hairless Aztec dogs of the sholoitskuintli breed… If "Eugene Onegin" is an encyclopedia of Russian life, then "Coco's Secret" can rightfully be called an encyclopedia of Mexican life, everyday and mythological.

As is almost always the case with Pixar, their new film is enchantingly beautiful and blockbuster grandiose. Most of the action takes place in the afterlife, and it looks so mesmerizing that you start to wonder if Miguel should stay in the next world, among amazing creatures and stunning urban panoramas inspired by ancient and modern Mexican architecture. Judging by the appearance of Mexico beyond the grave, it is much more carefree and picturesque than backwater Mexico, in which Miguel has to go to school and work after school in the family shoe workshop. However, the boy is not one of those who succumbs to difficulties and chooses the easy way. So he doesn't even think about not removing the curse and joining his deceased relatives before the deadline
