Peter Gabriel est un musicien et chanteur anglais né en 1950. Après avoir longtemps fait le bonheur du groupe Genesis, il s’est ensuite lancé dans une carrière solo couronnée de succès et a remporté de nombreux prix dans sa carrière, dont six grammy awards, trois brit awards et pas moins de treize MTV music video awards.



En 1967, alors qu’il étudie au lycée de Charterhouse, le groupe Genesis se forme en compagnie de quatre acolytes. En 1969 sort leur premier album, From genesis to revelation, qui ne passe pas inaperçu. Il sera suivi de six autres (dont un live) jusqu’en 1975, date à laquelle Peter Gabriel quitte le groupe. Il aura apporté à Genesis son incroyable présence scénique, même si c’est sans lui que le groupe connaîtra par la suite ses plus grands succès dans les années 80, sous le leadership de Phil Collins.



Ses premiers albums en solo, intitulés Peter Gabriel et sortis entre 1977 à 1982, assurent sa renommée, mais c’est grâce à son opus So, en 1986, qu’il atteint les sommets : l’album se classe n°1 en Grande-Bretagne, n°2 aux États-Unis et la chanson Sledgehammer est un immense hit dont le clip devient rapidement culte : il est récompensé neuf fois aux MTV Music Video Awards?! Son album suivant, Us, sorti en 1992, rencontre également un large public : les clips de l’album vaudront à son auteur trois grammy awards entre 1993 et 1996. Up, en 2002, fut un peu moins bien reçu et au début de la décennie 2010, Peter Gabriel sort coup sur coup un album de reprises, Scratch my back (2010) et un album où il réenregistre ses anciens tubes, New blood (2011). Sa dernière tournée en date, Back to front tour, a rempli les salles en 2014.



Peter Gabriel a également réalisé des incursions remarquées dans l’univers de la musique de films, pour lesquelles il a remporté un grammy award et des nominations aux Golden Globes : il a travaillé sur les bandes originales de La Dernière Tentation du Christ, de Martin Scorsese (1989), du Chemin de la liberté (2002) ou encore de Wall-E (2008).



Peter Gabriel est bien connu pour son engagement musical et social : à travers Worlds of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD), il aide des artistes du monde entier à enregistrer leur premier disque. Il est également très actif auprès d’Amnesty International, mais aussi auprès de l’association WITNESS, qu’il a lui-même fondée et qui promeut le respect des droits de l’Homme. Il participe régulièrement à des concerts caritatifs.



Peter a quatre enfants de deux différents mariages : Anna-Marie et Melanie (nées en 1974 et 1976) de son mariage avec Jill Moore?; Isaac Ralph et  Luc (nés en 2001 et 2008) de son mariage avec Meabh Flynn.
