Above the surface of the Earth, in twelve places on Earth, huge objects called "shells" suddenly appear, which are supposed to be extraterrestrials. Trying to understand the reasons and goals of their appearance, the American intelligence services contact specialists, among them the linguist Louis Banks and the astrophysicist Ian Donnelly. Louise begins to be haunted by strange visions of her daughter, who died of a rare disease at a young age. But it later becomes clear that Louise sees a future for her daughter and Ian.
