Un'entità aliena si impossessa di una nave scientifica russa, la Akademik Vladislav Volkoved, nel Pacifico meridionale mentre comunica con la stazione spaziale orbitante Mir, ed inizia a replicarsi usando i laboratori e le strutture della nave stessa.
