Un eroico avventuriero o un idealista ingenuo, un Thoreau ribelle degli anni '90 o uno dei tanti ragazzi perduti americani, un giovane coraggioso che non teme il rischio o una figura tragica che ha sfidato il precario equilibrio tra uomo e natura? Questa ricerca porterà Christopher dai campi di grano del South Dakota a un viaggio avventuroso e 'controcorrente' lungo il fiume Colorado, fino alla comune alternativa di Slab City, in California, e oltre. Strada facendo, incontrerà una serie di personaggi pittoreschi che vivono ai margini della società americana - uomini e donne che cambieranno la sua visione della vita, e che saranno a loro volta cambiati dall'incontro con lui. Alla fine, si metterà alla prova partendo da solo per le terre selvagge del grande nord, dove tutto quello che ha visto, imparato e vissuto lo condurrà verso un epilogo inatteso.
