Jared Oliver, a writer, is struggling with writer's block and personal demons. He works at a local school and is haunted by the story of a young girl, Amy, whom he imagines as the protagonist of his latest unfinished novel. His mundane life spirals when a series of unsettling events take place in the small town of Pineland, including the discovery of a young girl's body near a jogging trail, which bears a strange resemblance to his own writing. As Jared tries to ignore his growing obsession with the case, he crosses paths with various troubling characters, including Jeff, a rough neighbor with whom Jared becomes increasingly entangled. Jared's connection to the murder of Ariel Kennedy intensifies when a new girl named Nell enters his life, and his fixation on the case deepens.
