E01 Paradise Sold

On the South Island of New Zealand, 12-year-old Tui Mitcham is rescued from the freezing waters of a remote mountaintop lake, which she had walked into in an apparent attempt to take her own life. Her teacher notices that she is pregnant and with the small local police force ill-equipped to question her, social services enlist the help of child protection expert Detective Robin Griffin to talk to the girl and uncover the truth. Robin has only just returned to Queenstown from Sydney, Australia, to visit her dying mother but agrees to help. Slowly, she forges a connection with Tui and learns more about her and her family, but the young girl refuses to reveal the father of her unborn child.


Meanwhile, Tui's father Matt is bemused to find a small ad hoc village is created out of container crates on a plot of land known locally as Paradise, land which he believes he owns but has seemingly been sold by local estate agent Bob Platt. Populated by women of a certain age, veterans of love and rejection, the project is financed by rich divorcee Bunny but they are led by GJ, a silver-haired Svengali who administers a bracing form of kindness. Furious and seeking revenge, Matt sends his sons to question Platt, who has betrayed him with the sale.


As Robin continues to investigate Tui's case and learns more about the small town of Laketop, her world starts to unravel, uncovering difficult secrets from her past.





E02 Searchers Search

Early afternoon, Bunny slaps a hundred dollar bill down on the bar of the pub in Laketop and offers it to the first man who agrees to have sex with her. Bunny wants sex but on her guru GJ's orders is limiting her exposure to men to seven minutes in a bid to reduce the risk of emotional entanglement.


Robin briefs the officers assigned to the investigation into the disappearance of Tui Mitcham. Against a hostile atmosphere of know-it-all bravado, she lays out the list of possible suspects: family members, the Mitchams, and a local barman with a paedophile record, Wolfgang Zanic. Later at a coffee bar Al Parker opens up and tells Robin he is impressed and moved by the passion she shows for the investigation and agrees to give her two helicopters for an aerial search of the bush.


E03 The Edge of the Universe

Wolfgang Zanic's body is found, his house is ransacked and a suicide note is pinned to the table. As Al surveys the grim spectacle, Robin discovers a small grave in a clearing in the woods. Assuming the worst, Robin tells Johnno about the discovery as they wait for the forensics, neither Al nor Johnno can offer her comfort.


E04 A Rainbow Above Us

After the incident in the pub Al Parker tells Robin he has to let her go, and she is fired. But unofficially Robin won't let go of the case. After a night with Johnno, Robin spots a boy in a blue hoodie heading back from the lake. They lose sight of him but Johnno reveals to Robin that he's been keeping track of the local kids' canoes, checking when they go in and out.


E05 The Dark Creator

Robin returns from the funeral of her mother. Matt Mitcham flagellates himself at his mother's grave, guilty at the loss of his daughter and the misuse of his family land.


Jamie is arrested for shoplifting. As well as food in his bag there are some illegal drugs. He resists Robin's questioning and breaks into a self-harming rage when accused of raping Tui. Al Parker takes over. His more brutal methods, though humiliating for Jamie, don't make him talk. Jamie is sent home on a warning.

The next day he has left home, we follow him into the bush, where for the first time we see him join up with Tui.


Robin becomes convinced that Matt Mitcham and his drug-trafficking operation must be connected to Tui's disappearance. She's determined to go after him. Bob Platt's widow has allowed Robin access to her husband's computer files. With the help of some computer hacking friends, Robin discovers disturbing images of some kind of strange nightclub.


Matt is determined to send a bigger party into the bush to find Tui, he hires a gang of hunters to go in to find her.


Robin tries to question the women who work for Matt. They know that she knows they work for him making drugs but won't give anything away. That evening Robin is shot at in her house - a lethal kind of warning.


Tui and Jamie make their way to the women's camp. Tui needs advice on how to give birth. When the Mitcham boys turn up at the camp Tui retreats back into the woods. A group of Tui's friends secretly join her and Jamie in the bush to celebrate her birthday, trying to bring some joy to her. They all sense the danger she will be in if she stays in hiding to have her baby.


Some of Matt's men intercept Tui's friends as they return to civilization. With fresh intelligence on where she's hiding, Matt launches a full-scale search party.

Al Parker has arranged to meet Robin down on the wharf, instead he takes her out on his boat. Out in the middle of the water, he reveals that Matt Mitcham is on board - Matt has something to say to her and something Al wants her to hear. Johnno arrives before she gets to hear him out. He takes her straight into the bush to search for Tui, he knows Matt's men are out there. It is now a race to get to Tui.


Cornered by Matt's men, Tui makes a run for it, while Jamie tries to distract them. Spotted by Johnno as she runs along a precipice, Johnno begs her to come back. Pursued from all sides she can't stop, she loses her footing and falls.


E06 No Goodbyes Thanks

After the tragedy, the town has turned against Matt Mitcham. Jamie's mother, Simone, is prepared to testify against him and there are others willing to join her.

Tui's baby is due. Robin is more worried than ever, how will Tui manage alone?

Robin meets Al ready to confront him about the episode with Matt on the lake. Al reveals that Matt is ready to give a confession but wants to give it to her alone.

Prepared with recording equipment and police back up, Robin goes to hear Matt's confession. His revelation is not what she has been suspecting.


Back with Johnno, Robin has to confront her new reality. Though they want to defy what they've been told they can't shake the pollution of Matt's information.

Robin goes to Al at the police station; she wants to go after Matt hard. She wants to push through with her belief that he can be convicted. Al listens, sympathetic, but then insists another policeman witness the conversation. Matt's confession has jeopardized Robin's neutrality.


With no recourse, no action left to take, Robin is desperate. Drinking herself to a standstill, she tries to take her own life. When even these efforts fail, she finds herself in front of GJ, who tells her to lie down like a cat and sleep - heal herself.

Matt is at his wits' end. Ranting at his sons, he heads off on his own to find Tui.

Near despair, Robin summons all she has left to get to Tui before Matt. Nothing, though, can prepare her for where she will have to go or what she will have to see. Acting on instinct she heads off to confront the dark creator alone where the investigation reaches its shocking conclusion.
