Jenny Nix, wife of eminent child psychologist Carter Nix, becomes increasingly concerned about her husband's seemingly obsessive concern over the upbringing of their daughter. Her own adulterous affair with an old flame, however, causes her to neglect her motherly duties until a spate of local kidnapings forces her to accept the possibility that he may be trying to recreate the twisted mind-control experiments of his discreditied psychologist father.

OPIS
Doktor Nix Carter (John Lithgow) jest znanym psychologiem dziecięcym, synem sławnego specjalisty w tej samej dziedzinie. Oddany pracy, gotów jest dla dzieci na największe poświęcenia. Ze swoją żoną Jenny (Lolita Davidovich) mieszka w małej, spokojnej miejscowości, idealnej do wychowywania potomstwa. Gdy Carterom rodzi się córeczka, Nix zawiesza praktykę zawodową i poświęca się opiece nad maleństwem. Początkowo jego zachowanie nikogo nie dziwi, jednak z czasem żona dostrzega anomalie w zachowaniu męża. Nix do roli rodzica podchodzi w obsesyjny sposób, im dłużej przebywa z córką, tym bardziej oddala się od Jenny. Tymczasem ona zaczyna spotykać się ze swoim dawnym kochankiem Jackiem Dante (Steven Bauer). W tej sytuacji Carter ujawnia najmroczniejszą stronę swojej osobowości. Jenny nie wie jednak, że Nix prawdopodobnie padł ofiarą czyjejś manipulacji. W życiu jej męża pojawia się tajemniczy brat bliźniak..
