Гигантский монстр по кличке Туунбак, похожий на белого медведя, свирепо убивал и пожирал моряков, оставляя после себя следы разрухи и обглоданные трупы. Считавшийся легендой, он ожил и стал кошмаром для команды Франклина. Так затерявшиеся во льдах без надежды на помощь с большой земли мужчины начали борьбу уже не за открытие новых путей, а за собственные жизни. Дэн Симмонс, автор романа, положенного в основу сериала, смешал воедино реальные события и эскимосскую мифологию, в которой действительно существуют прототипы Туунбака — медведи Нанурлука и Кукувеака.
