The Gentlemen (2019) 2160p 4K HDR Bluray 10-bit x265 HEVC TrueHD Atmos 7.1 [XannyFamily]

Got something special here this Saturday afternoon. My first ever 4K HDR encode. My machine was working up a sweat for over 24 hours to encode it and the results look pretty nice.

I did my research here because encoding 4K HDR is more complex than simple 1080p. After some experimenting, in the end I used a CRF of 23 at x265's slow preset. On 4K HDR content this is the most efficient way to create a high quality encode. It takes literally more than a day unless you happen to be running a Xeon or equivalent, but it outputs excellent and efficiently encoded content. The x265 preset is never shown in media info but it's actually very important even for 1080p. Bitrate alone doesn't determine image quality. A lower CRF at medium preset will produce lower quality yet larger files than a higher CRF at slow preset.

With that rambling out the way, my description of the film itself from my 1080p encode:

British gangster comedy about an American ex-pat trying to sell his huge underground weed farm. Shit goes down.

This copy includes Dolby Atmos 7.1 audio. Combined with 4K HDR you got the full cinematic experience.

It goes without saying you need a 4K HDR TV to enjoy this to its full potential. Many video players will use tone mapping algorithms to convert HDR to SDR on the fly if needed but you'll get the best results from an HDR capable box connected to an HDR capable display.

Dolby Atmos is pretty cool if you have speakers or a sound bar that supports it. Emulates a true surround sound setup surprisingly well.
