quote:MTV’s embrace of splashy, expensive videos helped hard rock go mainstream in the ’80s—much to the chagrin of the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC), a committee that condemned the supposedly unsavoury music of artists such as Twisted Sister and Def Leppard. This disapproving stance misunderstood the genre’s ever-rebellious spirit and overlooked the creative explosions of ’80s hard rock. Some bands wielded glossy keyboards and pop hooks like their New Wave peers; others doubled down on the breakneck tempos and aggressive riffs that had first become popular thanks to ’70s heavies. The end result is that ’80s hard rock became a broad movement encompassing New Wave of British Heavy Metal power (Iron Maiden), radio-ready rock (Bon Jovi) and sleazy hair metal (Mötley Crüe). Although the latter movement faded soon after the ’80s ended, hard rock itself remained a permanent commercial force buoyed even more by the looming grunge and nu-metal explosions.
