Maria Francesca Cabrini, nata nel 1850, fu religiosa e missionaria con il nome di Frances Xavier Cabrini. Inviata da Papa Leone XIII a New York per assistere le ondate di immigrati italiani, che si riversavano su Ellis Island, si rivelò estremamente scaltra e determinata. Abilissima ad aprire cuori e portafogli riuscì a fondare numerosi ospedali e orfanotrofi dedicati agli italoamericani. Fu la prima cittadina americana a essere canonizzata, nel 1946.
