Maximus is a powerful Roman general, loved by the people and the aging Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Before his death, the Emperor chooses Maximus to be his heir over his own son, Commodus, and a power struggle leaves Maximus and his family condemned to death. The powerful general is unable to save his family, and his loss of will allows him to get captured and put into the Gladiator games until he dies. После автокатастрофы Кевин оказывается в незнакомом месте, а перед собой видит незнакомого человека. Загадочный незнакомец представляется Благодетелем и утверждает, что умеет «сдвигать» человека из одной паралелльной вселенной в другую. Усомнившемуся в его словах Кевину вскоре предоставляются неоспоримые доказательства. Осознав, что действительно оказался в альтернативной реальности, Кевин принимается искать способа вернуться в свой мир, к жене, которая оплакивает их исчезнувшего сынишку.
«Сдвиг» — недорогая, но отлично прописанная, поставленная и сыгранная фантастика, которая при ближайшем рассмотрении оказывается, скорее, мистической драмой с религиозным посылом. В фильме множество аллюзий на Библию и прямых цитат из Книги Иова.
