On the hunt for the soldiers that destroyed her town, Adelyn travels with her friends through Nelvara where surprising truths and revelations are uncovered. But as she draws near to the soldiers, her heart falls into shadows of dark vengeance which breaks the hearts of her friends, and shatters the heart of her beloved, Nole. In her darkest moment, she finds herself alone in a desperate situation of her own making as her anguished friends and Nole desperately search for her.

Meanwhile, the wizard Alistair and his captains are rescued from their prison by a member of the guild thought dead. Together, they escape the city of Rhomastad and encounter the dwarves of Baraknun as they flee their home to Parallim, where a dire situation awaits. Alistair and his companions then seek to reclaim the kingdom of Valero from the king who falsely imprisoned him and his captains, but in doing so, uncovers dark truths as the dark wizard who is behind everything is revealed.
