Success. The time was right, Japan was being invaded by films that were raising the thresholds of tolerance (with respect to sex and violence), tough films were arriving from abroad, pink and roman porn was now a reality apt to save a declining industry, Nikkatsu was relaunching the tough girls of Stray Cats Rock, and Lady Snowblood with its rivers of blood was a touchstone. All the themes collected in Hanzo the Razor were a reflection of a society and a cathartic expression of the political violence burning in the hearts of the boys, in open contrast to the corruption of the current capitalist system. Co-starring then becomes Hanzo's house, a receptacle of gadgets, traps, secret passages, lethal blades and arrows sprouting from every wall, torture room and outdoor gymnasium. The protagonist's ethics and moral code remain unchanged and become even more radical. Hanzo takes even the smallest cause to heart, especially if it has as its victim a beautiful maiden to “torture” as he likes to extract confessions, ready to take sides against the powerful, alone against everyone.
